Kamala Sohonie was an Indian biochemist and the first Indian woman to earn a doctorate in a scientific discipline. She was born on March 14, 1912, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and she passed away on June 28, 1998.
Sohonie completed her Bachelor of Science degree from Bombay University and later pursued a Master of Science in Biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. She then obtained a scholarship to study abroad and earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, England, in 1939.
After completing her studies, Kamala Sohonie returned to India and joined the Indian Institute of Science as a faculty member. She played a significant role in establishing biochemistry as a field of study in India and contributed to the development of research and education in the discipline.
Sohonie's research focused on studying enzymes and their role in metabolism. She made important contributions to the understanding of enzyme kinetics and the biochemical mechanisms involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates. Her work was recognized both in India and internationally.
Kamala Sohonie's pioneering achievements in the field of biochemistry, as well as her dedication to teaching and research, paved the way for other women to pursue scientific careers in India. She remains an inspiration for aspiring scientists, particularly women, in her home country and beyond.
