NASA announces discovery of 104 new planets outside solar system
NASA has announced the discovery of 104 new planets outside our solar system including four that could have Earth-like, rocky surfaces. Scientists discovered the exoplanets in Hawaii using Kepler space telescope. The unmanned Kepler mission has been scanning 150,000 stars in the Cygnus constellation for signs of orbiting bodies, particularly those that might be able to support life. The $600 million Kepler mission has allowed scientists to discover more than 4,600 planets 2,326 of them confirmed since it launched in 2009.
First Su-30 MKI with BrahMos Missile Flies Successfully
BrahMos Aerospace for the first time successfully demonstrated integration of the world’s most formidable supersonic cruise missile system BrahMos on the Sukhoi SU-30 MKI fighter aircraft. In this regard, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) Nasik division on 24 June conducted a test flight of a 2,500 kg supersonic BrahMos missile integrated with SU-30 MKI aircraft at its Nasik airport. With the successful integration of BrahMos missile system with Su-30 MKI aircraft Indian Air Force (IAF) became the first air force in the world in procession of a supersonic cruise missile system with a long range fighter aircraft. IAF also moved few steps closer towards actual test firing when a 2.5 tonnes supersonic BrahMos air-to-ground missile from the Su-30 MKI.
ISRO sets record by successfully launching 20 satellites in single mission
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched a record 20 satellites in a single mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The launch has been made by using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-34, carrying India’s latest earth observation satellite Cartosat-2 along with 19 co-passengers satellites from US, Canada, Germany, Indonesia and two Indian academic institutions. With 20 satellites, the ISRO has beaten its previous record of placing 10 satellites into orbit in a single mission in 2008.
China’s Sunway TaihuLight declared world’s fastest supercomputer
Chinese supercomputer Sunway TaihuLight with 93 petaflop/ second speed was declared as the world’s fastest supercomputer. It was revealed in the TOP500 list of supercomputers released at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Frankfurt, Germany. Sunway TaihuLight can perform 93 petaflop operations per second. It was developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology (NRCPC) and installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi.
Scientists Develop First 1000-processor Micro-chip In The World
The scientists have developed d a microchip, named KiloCore that has 1000 independent programmable processors. The microchip is the world’s first 1,000-processor chip and has the highest clock-rate processor ever designed at the university level. KiloCore microchip has been designed by a team scientist from the University of California, Davis, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. It contain around 621 million transistors and was fabricated by tech giant IBM using their 32 nm (nanometre) CMOS technology. It is the most energy efficient chip which has maximum computation rate of 1.78 trillion instructions per second. It can execute around 115 billion instructions per second by dissipating only 0.7 Watts of energy.
