Turkish musician Kudsi Erguner named UNESCO Artist for Peace
Turkish musician Kudsi Erguner was appointed as the UNESCO Artist for Peace by the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova. He was appointed after the opening ceremony of the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) held in Istanbul, Turkey. He was named UNESCO Artist for Peace in recognition of his Efforts to promote the universal values of music, an essential instrument of dialogue between cultures. Contribution to the protection of musical heritage, his support for the International Decade of the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022).
Kannada movie Thithi wins Best Film Award at Shanghai International Film Festival
Kannada Movie Thithi has won two awards viz. Best Film and Best Script Writers at the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival. It has won the awards under the Asia New Talent Awards Category Thithi is a dramatic comedy film cowritten and directed by Raam Reddy. It is about how three generations of sons react to the death of the oldest man in their clan, named Century Gowda who is a locally renowned, highly cantankerous 101-year-old man.
IIT-Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal awarded 2015 GD Birla Award
IIT-Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal has been awarded the twenty-fifth GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for the year 2015. He has been bestowed with this award for his significant contributions have been in the area of Mechanics. Sanjay Mittal is a Professor of computational fluid dynamics in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT-Kanpur. He also has worked in the area of sports aerodynamics.
Radhika Menon becomes first woman to bag IMO Award
Captain Radhika Menon became the first woman in the world to receive the Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for the year 2016 from the International Mari-time Organisation (IMO). She will be bestowed with this award for saving the lives of seven fishermen, whose hopes of survival were all over. The award will be presented to her at the ceremony set to take place at IMO Headquarters in London on 21 November 2016. She was chosen by 116th session of IMO Council meeting held in London. Captain Menon had displayed great determination and courage in leading the difficult rescue operation in the Bay of Bengal in June 2015.
Four Indian-Americans Honoured with 2016 Great Immigrants Award
“Indian-origin Google CEO Sunder Pichai and three other Indian-Americans are among the 42 US nationals honoured with this year’s prestigious ‘Great Immigrants: The Pride of America’ award 2016. The other three Indian-Americans are Hari Sreenivasan, anchor and senior correspondent, PBS NewsHour, Vikram Malhotra, Chairman of the Americas at McKinsey & Company and Bharati Mukherjee, National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author. They are among 42 distinguished US personalities representing more than 30 countries of origin around the world honoured with this year’s award. All of these personalities represent a wide range of personal immigration stories, and inspiring professional accomplishments.The award is given by New York-based Carnegie Corporation on the occasion of Independence Day of United States i.e. 4th July.”
