The committee comprising parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee and opposition leader Surjya Kanta Mishra proposed the four shortlisted new names – Bangla, Paschim Banga, Banga Pradesh and Bangabhumi for West Bengal at an all-party meeting.
The problem that the letter W in West Bengal comes last on a list( in all India meetings of states) prepared alphabetically, can be solved with Paschim Banga as the new name, which also mirrors its history.
The state BJP did not participate in meeting(because not invited), but decided not to object to the name Pachimbanga.
Six names were short listed and from those names Paschimbanga has been selected as the new name of West Bengal. For few more days people will use the previous name of the state, ultimately they will become accustomed the new name, Paschimbanga.
Earlier Left Front also endorsed the move of the state government to change the name of the state. State Left Front Chairman Biman Basu said that in 1999, Left Front government also raised similar proposal for new name of West Bengal and at that they selected 'Banga' as the new name.
