Sports News: Saina Nehwal wins Australian Open Super Series title 2014
The 24-year-old Saina, who enjoyed a 1-0 head-to-head record against Marin going into Sunday's match, logged the first point and displayed some deft net play against her rival, stroking in some delectably timed volleys to take a 5-2 lead in the opening game.
But the 21-year-old Marin was not the one to give up easily and showed just why she is considered one of the most feisty players on the circuit. She narrowed the gap to 6-8 but seemed distinctly out of her comfort zone every time Saina dragged her towards the net.
Also, Marin didn't help her cause by committing a service error to gift an easy point to Saina, who went into the interval leading 11-7 after an intriguing rally which ended with the Spaniard smashing the shuttle wide.
Marin raised her game and the decibel levels after the break but Saina was quick to counter-attack and returned her rival's attempted smashes with quiet intensity.
In between, Marin played some fine strokes but they never came consistently enough as Saina made it 17-12. Marin's dogged determination was there to be seen in every point she played for but that alone was never going to be enough to upstage a composed Saina.
The Indian, who didn't seem affected at all by Marin's aggressive outpouring of emotions after every claimed point, sealed the opening game 21-18 after her world number 11 rival smashed one into the net 23 minutes into the match.
In the second game, Marin's determination helped her take a 3-1 lead to start with but it was not too long before Saina came back into the fray, this time on the back of some well-placed strokes from the baseline.
Perhaps taking a cue from Marin, Saina too let some emotion show as she clenched her fist and shouted 'come on' after every clinched point. But one of her screams came about in the middle of a rally, prompting Marin to complain to the chair umpire, who merely asked her to continue.

Educational Buzz: 17 Countries now recognise Indian Engineering Degrees
Good news for holders of Indian Engineering Degrees . Engineering graduates can now easily apply to foreign universities of take advantage of international prospects as engineering degrees of India will now be recognized across 17 major countries. India has now become the permanent member of the Washington Accord which would mean access to countries like US, Japan, Australia. Washington Accord is an international agreement for accrediting undergraduate engineering degree programmes.
Although pass outs of IITs have not yet faced a problem in terms moving on and being accepted to colleges abroad but that is the least we can say about graduates from the other engineering colleges present in the country.
The Washington Accord aims at encouraging mobility and quality assurance across countries. Becoming a member of the Washington Accord implies that the engineering students of India are meeting the academic requirements necessary to take practice of engineering in any of the signatory countries.
Smriti Irani, HRD Minister was quoted by The Economic Times, having congratulated the officials of HRD ministry, "This will ensure highest quality assurance standards to be implemented in our technical and engineering programmes and provide global mobility to our engineering graduates. Graduates having degrees, which have been so accredited, would have substantial international equivalence of their achievement levels across the signatory nations. This will substantially enhance their employment opportunities around the world."
The efforts to be part of this have been going on since 2002, although a serious effort was only made by the Kapil Sibal, former HRD Minister, by including granting of autonomous status to the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) as it is necessary to have a national accreditation system by the Washington Accord to be a member.

Mumbai Metro Started services: Maharashtra CM Prithivraj Chavan flags off Mumbai Metro
The Mumbai metro will finally started commercial operations from Sunday, June 8, after a delay of three years, providing much-needed relief to commuters in the bustling metropolis where the overburdened suburban railways ferries seven lakh people every day.
Services on the 11.4 KM Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch (Phase 1 of the project) will see trains available every four minutes, Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) Chief Executive Abhay Mishra said on Saturday.
The announcement by the operator came after local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Krit Somaiya threatened to start metro services by "force". For a city where the sight of harried passengers clinging precariously to doors and windows of overcrowded coaches of suburban trains is common, the metro will give a new travel experience.
The company has said it will operate 200-250 services a day, carrying around 11 lakh passengers. Every coach can carry 375 passengers and the entire train can transport 1,500 commuters.
The metro service comes four months after the city got the country's first monorail between suburban Chembur and Wadala on February 1 this year. The MMOPL has fixed a minimum fare of Rs 10 and a maximum Rs 40 for a one way journey, Mishra said.
The Maharashtra government earlier notified a fare band of Rs 9 to Rs13 but the MMOPL demanded high fares, citing cost escalation in the three-phase project, work on which began nearly eight years ago.
MMOPL is a joint venture company formed by Reliance Infrastructure, Veolia Transport and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
The Railway Board had on Thursday given its green signal for commencement of the services.
