India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 6.1 per cent for the quarter ending 31 December 2011, signalling a sharp slowdown in economic activity.
The GDP growth is also slower than the 6.9 per cent in the September quarter, and has been declining for the past nine quarters. This is also the lowest in the past 13 quarters.
A Thomson Reuters poll of 26 economists released on Tuesday had put GDP growth at an annual 6.4 percent rate in the quarters, with forecasts ranging from 6.0 to 7.3 per cent with a majority of them lying below the consensus.
Manufacturing growth was hurt the most in the December quarter, clocking 0.4 per cent against 7. 8 per cent in the corresponding period last year. Agriculture also saw a sharp decline at 2.7 per cent, down from 11 per cent in the year-ago period.
Mining fell by almost half, from 6.1 per cent to 3.1 per cent, signally lower supply of raw materials for industry but also fuelled by lower demand as higher interest rates have put off companies from investing in expansion.
The trade and hotels industries fared better at 9.2 per cent, while construction slowed marginally from 8.7 per cent to 7.2 per cent.

India's economic growth slowed to its weakest annual pace in almost three years in the three months to December, as high interest rates and rising input costs constrained investment and manufacturing.
GDP rose 6.1 per cent in October to December compared with a year earlier, a lower-than-expected increase, figures from the statistics office showed.
That marked a sharp pullback from 6.9 per cent growth in July to September and was the seventh successive quarterly slowdown, providing a gloomy backdrop for a Reserve Bank policy meeting and federal budget, both due in just over two weeks.
The median forecast of economists in a Reuters poll was for GDP to rise 6.4 per cent. The outcome of 6.1 per cent was the weakest in 11 quarters.
"Moderation in the manufacturing sector was likely the starkest as higher input prices and a sharp jump in borrowing costs depressed output," said Radhika Rao, an economist at Forecast in Singapore.
"The ball is in the government's court now to kick start policy reforms."

Nokia gave few details of the specs, but said that it would run a 1.3 GHz single-core processor along with 512 MB of RAM. The 808 PureView will also sport 16GB of on-board memory that is expandable using a microSD card.
The winning feature of the phone happens to be a 41-megapixel sensor that has been developed after years of research. Nokia says they managed to do so using an interpolation technique that packs 5 pixels into 1.
The availability of the 808 PureView in India is not yet known.

Domestic violence against women is far too pervasive a phenomenon in for its seriousness to be underplayed by any manner of sophistry or swept under the carpet as occasional social aberrations. Very large number of women in India are constant victims of violence, whether in the natal family or matrimonial. They are routinely scolded, often beaten, sexually violated at will, generally maltreated, and by and large shown little consideration. They are considered a burden by their own kin and partner. Indeed the very question of her life and sustenance with dignity is continuously at stake. Despite these glaring facts, there is, ironically, a significant under-layer of general opinion which believes that there is a misuse and abuse of the provisions of various Acts, specially of Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 498A (cruelty to married woman) and that now with the introduction of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDV), they apprehend, howsoever misplaced the apprehension may be, that a flood gate of litigation will open, with intent to secure/manipulate either permanent settlement/ dowry articles/alimony /maintenance; in other words extortion of money.

A full-size wax statue of Dadasaheb Phalke will be created and installed at the Celebrity Wax Museum (CWM) in Lonavala, according to a trustee of the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed here late Thursday with CWM's managing director Sunil Kandalloor, commissioning the statue, which will be ready by May 3, the trustee said here.
The occasion was to mark the 68th death anniversary of Dadasaheb Phalke yesterday at the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, in which a host of Bollywood personalities paid homage to the father of Indian cinema.
Born on April 30, 1870, at Trimbakeshwar, near Nashik, Dadasaheb Phalke made his debut with India's first full-length silent movie "Raja Harishchandra" in 1913.
In a career spanning nearly 25 years, he made 95 movies and 26 short movies, including classics like "Mohini Bhasmasur" (1913), "Satyavan Savitri" (1914), "Lanka Dahan" (1917), "Shri Krishna Janma" (1918) and "Kaliya Mardan" (1919).
However, he became a victim to technological advancements in the art of filmmaking, especially with the introduction and advent of sound in movies, known as 'talkies' in those days.
Unable to cope with the severe competition posed by 'talkies,' Dadasaheb Phalke found few takers for his films, compelling him to make his last silent movie "Setubandhan" (1932) and releasing it with dubbed voices.
Later, in 1937, he attempted his last movie, "Gangavatara" before giving up and retiring to his home district. He died there Feb 16, 1944.
Acknowledging his immense contribution to the growth and development of the Indian film industry and cinema in general, the government instituted the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1969.
Each year, the prestigious award is conferred on a most outstanding film personality who has dedicated his or her lifetime to cinema.
Some of the awardees include Devika Rani Chaudhuri-Roerich (1969), Prithviraj Kapoor, Naushad Ali, Sohrab Modi, Durga Khote, V. Shantaram, Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Bhupen Hazarika, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Pradeep, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Asha Bhosle, Dev Anand, Mrinal Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shyam Benegal, Manna Dey and D. Rama Naidu.
Present to pay homage to him on his 68th death anniversary Thursday were filmmakers Anil Sharma, Gautam Bhatiya, Gopal Ram, Romy Behl, veteran actor Chandrashekhar, singer Udit Narayan and trustees Ramgopal Gupta, Neena Jalan and Prabhat Pandey.

The UN General Assembly has voted in favour of a resolution that condemned the violent crackdown in Syria and urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. India supported the Arab League-backed resolution, but made it clear that it was opposed to use of force.
The resolution, adopted by a vote of 137 in favour to 12 against with 17 abstentions, Thursday called on Syria "to immediately put an end to all human rights violations and attacks against civilians".
Russia and China voted against the resolution. The two countries had vetoed the Arab League-backed resolution in the UN Security Council over a fortnight ago.
The vote, though non-binding in nature, is seen as a strong rebuke to President Bashar al-Assad's continued and bloody crackdown on protesters during the pro-democracy uprising that began in March last year.
Explaining India's vote on the UNGA resolution, India's Permanent Representative Hardeep Singh Puri underlined that while India condemned violence, it opposed any use of force by a third country and advocated a Syrian-led political reconciliation.
"We think that prolonged instability and unrest in Syria have serious implications for peace and stability in the wider region. We strongly condemn all violence, irrespective of whoever the perpetrators are. We also condemn all violations of human rights," said Puri.
"Our support for the resolution adopted by this assembly today is in accordance with our support for the efforts by the Arab League for a peaceful resolution of the crisis through a Syrian-led inclusive political process," Puri added.
"My delegation notes that the resolution just adopted expressly reaffirms that all countries should refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state or act in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations," he said.

In a much needed boost to India's bid to host the 2017 Under-17 World Cup Football, FIFA President Sepp Blatter will visit the country early next month to have a first-hand account of the developmental work here.
The short answer is "nothing". The retail FOREX market is purely a
speculative market. No physical exchange of currencies ever takes
place. All trades exist simply as computer entries and are netted out
depending on market price. For dollar-denominated accounts, all
profits or losses are calculated in dollars and recorded as such on
the trader's account.
The prime reason behind existence of FOREX market is to facilitate the
exchange of one currency into another for multinational corporations
that trade currencies continually (for example, for payroll, payment
for costs of goods and services from foreign vendors, and merger and
acquisition activity). However, these days corporate comprise only
about 20% of the market volume. Fully 80% of trades in the currency
market are speculative in nature, put on by large financial
institutions, multibillion dollar hedge funds and even individuals who
want to express their opinions on the economic and geopolitical events
of the day.
Because currencies always trade in pairs, when a trader makes a trade
he or she is always long (buy) one currency and short (sell) the
other. For example, if a trader sells one standard lot (equivalent to
100,000 units) of EUR/USD, she would, in essence, have exchanged euros
for dollars and would now be "short" euros and "long" dollars. To
better understand this dynamic, let's use a concrete example. If you
went into an electronics store and purchased a computer for $1,000,
what would you be doing? You would be exchanging your dollars for a
computer. You would basically be "short" $1,000 and "long" one
computer. The store would be "long" $1,000 but now "short" one
computer in its inventory. The exact same principle applies to the FX
market, except that no physical exchange takes place. While all
transactions are simply computer entries, the consequences are no less
real.
