India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 6.1 in December quarter

India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 6.1 per cent for the quarter ending 31 December 2011, signalling a sharp slowdown in economic activity.

The GDP growth is also slower than the 6.9 per cent in the September quarter, and has been declining for the past nine quarters. This is also the lowest in the past 13 quarters.

A Thomson Reuters poll of 26 economists released on Tuesday had put GDP growth at an annual 6.4 percent rate in the quarters, with forecasts ranging from 6.0 to 7.3 per cent with a majority of them lying below the consensus.

Manufacturing growth was hurt the most in the December quarter, clocking 0.4 per cent against 7. 8 per cent in the corresponding period last year. Agriculture also saw a sharp decline at 2.7 per cent, down from 11 per cent in the year-ago period.

Mining fell by almost half, from 6.1 per cent to 3.1 per cent, signally lower supply of raw materials for industry but also fuelled by lower demand as higher interest rates have put off companies from investing in expansion.

The trade and hotels industries fared better at 9.2 per cent, while construction slowed marginally from 8.7 per cent to 7.2 per cent.

Indian Economy :India's economic growth weakest in almost three years

India's economic growth weakest in almost three years

India's economic growth slowed to its weakest annual pace in almost three years in the three months to December, as high interest rates and rising input costs constrained investment and manufacturing.

GDP rose 6.1 per cent in October to December compared with a year earlier, a lower-than-expected increase, figures from the statistics office showed.

That marked a sharp pullback from 6.9 per cent growth in July to September and was the seventh successive quarterly slowdown, providing a gloomy backdrop for a Reserve Bank policy meeting and federal budget, both due in just over two weeks.

The median forecast of economists in a Reuters poll was for GDP to rise 6.4 per cent. The outcome of 6.1 per cent was the weakest in 11 quarters.

"Moderation in the manufacturing sector was likely the starkest as higher input prices and a sharp jump in borrowing costs depressed output," said Radhika Rao, an economist at Forecast in Singapore.

"The ball is in the government's court now to kick start policy reforms."

Gk :World's shortest man is 72-year-old Chandra Bahadur Dangi of Nepal...!

CBS) It's official: The world's shortest man is Chandra Bahadur Dangi from Nepal, Guinness World Records announced Sunday.

World's shortest man is 21.5-inch-tall Nepalese 72-year-old

The 72-year-old man stands at 21.5 inches tall, a mere 5 centimeters shorter than his predecessor.

According to Guinness, Dangi hails from the Nepalese village of Reemkholi in Dang district, more than 250 miles outside of the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. He is the seventh sibling of a family of six brothers and two sisters; three of his five brothers were less than four feet tall, while his two sisters and two brothers are of average height. Dangi spends his days making placemats and head straps for villagers, and despite his age, says he's never taken any medicine or seen a doctor.

"Just when you think it's impossible for the record to get any smaller, Mr Chandra comes along and astonishes us all by being the shortest person ever measured," Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said in a statement. "What I find equally remarkable is his age - if he really is 72, he is by far the oldest person to be awarded the shortest-man record in Guinness World Record's 57-year history."

The previous record-holder was 23.5-inch-tall Junrey Balawing, 18, of the Philippines, HealthPop reported. Prior to that, the record-holder was another Nepalese man, Khagendra Thapa Magar, who stood at 26.4 inches tall.

Here is Dangi accepting the award from Guinness, and spending time in his home village:

Camera phone:Nokia announces 41-megapixel 808 PureView

Nokia has just come forth at MWC with a slew of announcements, one of them being the announcement of Nokia 808 PureView camera phone.

Nokia gave few details of the specs, but said that it would run a 1.3 GHz single-core processor along with 512 MB of RAM. The 808 PureView will also sport 16GB of on-board memory that is expandable using a microSD card.

The winning feature of the phone happens to be a 41-megapixel sensor that has been developed after years of research. Nokia says they managed to do so using an interpolation technique that packs 5 pixels into 1.

The availability of the 808 PureView in India is not yet known.

A Book on laws :Married but not legally wed

'Married but not legally wed' – A book on laws for protection of women against violence

Domestic violence against women is far too pervasive a phenomenon in for its seriousness to be underplayed by any manner of sophistry or swept under the carpet as occasional social aberrations. Very large number of women in India are constant victims of violence, whether in the natal family or matrimonial. They are routinely scolded, often beaten, sexually violated at will, generally maltreated, and by and large shown little consideration. They are considered a burden by their own kin and partner. Indeed the very question of her life and sustenance with dignity is continuously at stake. Despite these glaring facts, there is, ironically, a significant under-layer of general opinion which believes that there is a misuse and abuse of the provisions of various Acts, specially of Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 498A (cruelty to married woman) and that now with the introduction of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDV), they apprehend, howsoever misplaced the apprehension may be, that a flood gate of litigation will open, with intent to secure/manipulate either permanent settlement/ dowry articles/alimony /maintenance; in other words extortion of money.

first international award :India-born biologist Kamal Bawa bags world's 1st major international award

India-born biologist Kamal Bawa has bagged the world's first international award for outstanding scientific work that promotes sustainable development globally.

Dr. Bawa, distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, will receive the Gunnerus Sustainability Award from the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters (DKNVS) at a function in Trondheim, Norway on April 17, an official announcement said.

"We are very pleased to have selected such a worthy winner of the first Gunnerus award," said Professor Kristian Fossheim, president of DKNVS.

The Gunnerus award is the first major international prize for outstanding scientific work that promotes sustainable development globally, and will be awarded every two years starting in 2012.

Dr Bawa is most noted for his pioneering work on population biology in rainforest areas.
His wide span of research includes groundbreaking biological discoveries made in Central America, Western Ghats in India and the Himalayas.

He is specially noted for the establishment, and as President, of Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) in Bangalore.

Until recently, he also held Ruffolo Giorgio Fellowship in Sustainability Science and Bullard Fellowship at Harvard University.

"I am very pleased over the recognition that our work has received," Dr Bawa said.
The award is named after DKNVS' founder Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus (1718—1773) and is the result of collaboration between DKNVS, Sparebank1 SMN and the society Technoport.

The first ever meeting of G-20 Foreign Ministers to discuss global issues in Mexico

The first ever meeting of G-20 foreign ministers would discuss pressing global issues including governance, trans-national crime, green growth, climate change and food security, US officials have said.

Organised by Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa in the Mexican resort town of Los Cabos, the meeting is to be attended by among others US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

Several other G-20 countries including France, China, Brazil and India would be represented at a lower level.

Mexico is the current chair of the G-20 countries and the summit would be hosted on June 18-19.

A senior state department official said that the meeting is informal so it would not result in any formal statements.

"This meeting reflects, in many ways, the evolution of the G-20 since the first summit of Washington in the fall of 2008, which, was designed to deal with the global financial crisis," the official said.

"This is going to focus on broad non-financial global issues, some of which have been discussed by G-20 leaders in the past, but some of which are new to the G-20 process or at least have not been emphasised to any great degree, including some broad economic governance issues, some environmental issues, development policy, and green growth," the official said.

During her meetings, Clinton would be amplifying some themes that are included in the broad G-20 mandate, which is balanced and sustainable growth.

Although, she will not going to get into the details of the G-20 financial part of the process, but she will call for an open, free, transparent, and fair global economic system.

Clinton will address things like anti-competitive government practices or distortions, which encompass the ways in which governments artificially distort markets or create uneven economic playing fields, the official said.

Among other things, Clinton will also highlight issues like climate change, freedom of navigation and maritime security to promote a well-functioning global economy; besides governance issues like fight against corruption and bribery.

world news:U.S. launches new coalition to fight climate change

U.S. launches new coalition to fight climate change

The U.S. has roped in Bangladesh and four other nations under a new six-country global initiative to combat climate change, protect health, improve agricultural productivity and strengthen energy security.
Announcing the 'Climate and Clean Air Coalition' here, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the world has not done enough to fight climate change and the coalition of the United States, Bangladesh, Canada, Mexico, Sweden and Ghana will work to curb black carbon, methane and hydro-fluorocarbons (HFCs).
Ms. Clinton said the U.S. will contribute USD 12 million to the initiative to spread practical ideas and practices.

This coalition — the first international effort of its kind — will conduct a targeted, practical, and highly energetic global campaign to spread solutions to the short-lived pollutants worldwide, she said.
It will mobilise resources, assemble political support, help countries develop and implement a national action plan, raise public awareness, and reach out to other countries, companies, NGOs and foundations.
Describing climate change as one of the most serious and complex problems facing the world, she said it impacted "global security, global economy, global food and water supplies, and the health and well-being of people everywhere."

"And we know that in the principal effort necessary to reduce the effects of carbon dioxide, the world has not yet done enough. So when we discover effective and affordable ways to reduce global warming — not just a little, but by a lot — it is a call to action," she said.

She pointed out that more than one-third of current global warming is caused by short—lived pollutants. They also destroy millions of tonnes of crops every year and wreak havoc on people's health.
"Millions die annually from constantly breathing in black carbon soot that comes from cook—stoves in their own homes, from diesel cars and trucks on their roads, from the open burning of agricultural waste in their fields," she noted.

"By focusing on these pollutants — how to reduce them and, where possible, use them for energy — we can have local and regional effects that people can see and feel," she said.
Ms. Clinton noted that the U.N. Environment Programme has determined that reducing these pollutants can slow global warming by up to a half degree Celsius by 2050. To put that into context, the world's goal is to limit the rise in global temperature to two degrees. So a half a degree, or 25 per cent, is significant, she said.

Precision-Guided Munitions :DRDO scientists to develop advanced seekers for tactical missiles

Imagine a war scenario in which miniaturised missiles equipped with Precision-Guided Munitions (PGMs) are unleashed from a mother missile to take out select enemy targets like an ammunition depot while avoiding collateral damage.

A mother missile acts as a "force multiplier" and to achieve the desired result, each miniaturised missile will have a seeker to ensure its independent motion, irrespective of the mother missile's motion.
Seekers, which are of two types — radio-frequency and infra-red, enable a missile to acquire, track and home in on to the target. They are required for all tactical missiles (less than 300 km range).
Scientists at the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a key laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) missile complex here, have embarked on developing such seekers to eventually equip mother missiles with smaller missiles packed with PGMs.
The mandate of the RCI is to deliver avionic systems for all missiles, including anti-ballistic systems and anti-aircraft missiles.

In a bid to conduct trials without using the mother missile, a Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) has been imported to be used as a Technology Demonstrator for the project. A flight trial was conducted at the Integrated Test Range using the RPV along with a recoverable tow body by providing the vehicle the same velocity of a mother missile.

Good results were obtained from that exercise, RCI Director S.K. Chaudhuri told The Hindu on Sunday. More such trials would be carried out in stages to check the guidance, control and inertial navigation systems.
By the end of 2013, a crucial trial of the RPV with missile-launched PGMs to hit a target with both IIR (Imaging infrared) and mmW (millimteric Wave) seekers was being planned. Later, a flight test with a mother missile would be conducted, he said.

Another frontier technology area in which scientists have begun work is to design and develop 'Low Probability of Intercept Radar Seeker' to equip anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles.
This seeker will enable the missile to escape detection and jamming by enemy radars. Currently, Russia and the U.S. have such seekers, a senior RCI scientist said.
A few months ago, a major success was achieved when anti-tank Nag missile was flight-tested with an indigenously-developed mmW seeker.

Misailrodhi defense system

India's missile force is the historic day of 10 February. The day the scientists Misailrodhi enabling security system and tested it a great success. The trial was conducted in two places on the beaches of Orissa. The interceptor missile, the Prithvi missile at an altitude of 15 kilometers from the sea route around stopped and demolished it in a few seconds. Enemy missiles falling on the ground before any flight in the sky to destroy the missile interceptor is called. Threat of enemy missiles impervious to aggressive efforts to develop armor were initiated in 1999. The results of this exercise in 2006 came the first successfully tested on November 27. 6 December 2007 and 6 March, 2009 after it was successfully tested. Interceptor missile revised form March 14, 2010 The next test was to be from the Wheeler Island, the missile sub-system has been put on hold due to technical flaws. The July 26, 2010 and 6 March 2011, the fifth and sixth tests were successful. According to scientists the results of these tests and the deadly effects of interceptor missiles are being analyzed. Approximately 7.5 m long solid rocket propelled guided missile interceptor is a phase. This advanced system has been Navigeshn Intiriyl the right direction and it is able to be changed according to need. This system makes sure its fire power. The missile is equipped with modern direction indicator system. The interceptor missile radar to detect incoming missiles and its data link, internal operating systems and secure data links. Interceptor missile fired by an enemy missile destroyer of any speed, direction and time calculations, etc., and is capable of destroying it in the air very soon. Infrared sensors and sophisticated cameras that give prompt notice of the activities of the sky. It is easy to target him. Since it can be fired from mobile launchers and also increases its potential in the war. The two-tier ballistic missile defense missile system has been developed under the scheme. It is completely indigenous supersonic missile. To a height of 50 kilometers of enemy missile interceptor missiles that shot down the inter-regional air missile called. The missile has an advanced air defense. Yet this technology, America, Russia, China, France, Italy, Britain and the Israelis to do the same. India has been added to this list. Indian film industry:On 100 years of Indian cinema, wax statue to honour Phalke

To mark the centenary of the Indian film industry falling May 3, 2012, a fitting tribute will be paid to its legendary founding father, Dhundiraj G. Phalke, famous as Dadasaheb Phalke, an official said here Friday.

A full-size wax statue of Dadasaheb Phalke will be created and installed at the Celebrity Wax Museum (CWM) in Lonavala, according to a trustee of the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed here late Thursday with CWM's managing director Sunil Kandalloor, commissioning the statue, which will be ready by May 3, the trustee said here.

The occasion was to mark the 68th death anniversary of Dadasaheb Phalke yesterday at the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, in which a host of Bollywood personalities paid homage to the father of Indian cinema.

Born on April 30, 1870, at Trimbakeshwar, near Nashik, Dadasaheb Phalke made his debut with India's first full-length silent movie "Raja Harishchandra" in 1913.

In a career spanning nearly 25 years, he made 95 movies and 26 short movies, including classics like "Mohini Bhasmasur" (1913), "Satyavan Savitri" (1914), "Lanka Dahan" (1917), "Shri Krishna Janma" (1918) and "Kaliya Mardan" (1919).

However, he became a victim to technological advancements in the art of filmmaking, especially with the introduction and advent of sound in movies, known as 'talkies' in those days.

Unable to cope with the severe competition posed by 'talkies,' Dadasaheb Phalke found few takers for his films, compelling him to make his last silent movie "Setubandhan" (1932) and releasing it with dubbed voices.

Later, in 1937, he attempted his last movie, "Gangavatara" before giving up and retiring to his home district. He died there Feb 16, 1944.

Acknowledging his immense contribution to the growth and development of the Indian film industry and cinema in general, the government instituted the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1969.

Each year, the prestigious award is conferred on a most outstanding film personality who has dedicated his or her lifetime to cinema.

Some of the awardees include Devika Rani Chaudhuri-Roerich (1969), Prithviraj Kapoor, Naushad Ali, Sohrab Modi, Durga Khote, V. Shantaram, Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Bhupen Hazarika, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Pradeep, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Asha Bhosle, Dev Anand, Mrinal Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shyam Benegal, Manna Dey and D. Rama Naidu.

Present to pay homage to him on his 68th death anniversary Thursday were filmmakers Anil Sharma, Gautam Bhatiya, Gopal Ram, Romy Behl, veteran actor Chandrashekhar, singer Udit Narayan and trustees Ramgopal Gupta, Neena Jalan and Prabhat Pandey.

UN General Assembly: India votes for Syria resolution in UNGA

The UN General Assembly has voted in favour of a resolution that condemned the violent crackdown in Syria and urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. India supported the Arab League-backed resolution, but made it clear that it was opposed to use of force.

The resolution, adopted by a vote of 137 in favour to 12 against with 17 abstentions, Thursday called on Syria "to immediately put an end to all human rights violations and attacks against civilians".

Russia and China voted against the resolution. The two countries had vetoed the Arab League-backed resolution in the UN Security Council over a fortnight ago.

The vote, though non-binding in nature, is seen as a strong rebuke to President Bashar al-Assad's continued and bloody crackdown on protesters during the pro-democracy uprising that began in March last year.

Explaining India's vote on the UNGA resolution, India's Permanent Representative Hardeep Singh Puri underlined that while India condemned violence, it opposed any use of force by a third country and advocated a Syrian-led political reconciliation.

"We think that prolonged instability and unrest in Syria have serious implications for peace and stability in the wider region. We strongly condemn all violence, irrespective of whoever the perpetrators are. We also condemn all violations of human rights," said Puri.

"Our support for the resolution adopted by this assembly today is in accordance with our support for the efforts by the Arab League for a peaceful resolution of the crisis through a Syrian-led inclusive political process," Puri added.

"My delegation notes that the resolution just adopted expressly reaffirms that all countries should refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state or act in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations," he said.

British Academy Film Awards: The Artist named Best Picture at the British Academy Film Awards

Silent movie The Artist had a night to shout about Sunday, winning seven prizes including Best Picture at the British Academy Film Awards.

Britain's equivalent of the Oscars rewarded the French homage to old Hollywood over a homegrown favorite, espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The Artist, a black-and-white picture that has charmed audiences around the world since its Cannes debut in May, was named best film, and its rubber-limbed star Jean Dujardin took the male acting prize. Its filmmaker, Michel Hazanavicius, won prizes for directing and his original screenplay.

Dujardin said it was "incroyable" -- incredible -- to win a prize in the homeland of acting titan Laurence Olivier, William Webb Ellis -- the inventor of rugby -- "and Benny Hill."

Hazanavicius thanked presenter Brad Pitt for pronouncing his name correctly -- and academy voters for recognizing that his silent film even had a screenplay.

"So many people thought there was no script because there was no dialogue," he said.

Another homage to early cinema, Martin Scorsese's Parisian fantasy Hugo, took prizes for sound and production design.

John le Carre adaptation Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy went into the ceremony with 11 nominations compared to 12 for The Artist, but won just two prizes, for British film and for adapted screenplay.

Writer Peter Straughan dedicated the screenplay award to his wife and co-writer Bridget O'Connor, who died of cancer before the film was completed.

"She wrote all the good bits and I made this coffee," Straughan said. "So, Bridget -- I love you, I miss you. This is for you."

The British prizes, known as BAFTAs, are considered a strong indicator of likely success at Hollywood's Academy Awards, to be held on February 26.

The trophies give more momentum to The Artist, which has already won three Golden Globes, and has 10 Oscar nominations.

Dujardin, who plays a silent screen icon eclipsed by the talkies, said the appeal of The Artist lay in its accessibility.

"It's a simple story," he said. "It's a love story. It's universal. And there's a cute dog" -- Jack Russell terrier Uggie, who almost steals the film from his two-legged co-stars.

The Artist also won prizes for cinematography, costume design and for Ludovic Bource's sprightly musical score.

As predicted, Meryl Streep was named best actress for her depiction of Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first female prime minister, in The Iron Lady. The film also won a well-deserved prize for hair and makeup.

"The ambition of this film was to look at the life of the Iron Lady from the inside out, and to locate something real -- maybe hidden but truthful -- in the life of someone we've all decided we know everything about already," Streep said.

The supporting actor prize went to Christopher Plummer, as an academic who makes a new start late in life in Beginners. Octavia Spencer was named best supporting actress for her turn as a fiery maid in Deep South drama The Help. Spencer said The Help had been called "an American movie about American problems and American history."

"I am so grateful to you for seeing past that," she said. "Because surely oppression knows no gender, no sexual orientation, no country."

George Clooney, Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Colin Firth and Judi Dench were among the stars who braved the London cold and bouts of sleet to walk the red carpet before a televised ceremony, hosted by comedian, writer and actor Stephen Fry, at the Royal Opera House.

Many of the frocks were in muted or pastel tones, though The Help star Viola Davis, a best-actress nominee, arrived in a pink Valentino "eco gown" made from recycled plastic bottles.

Presenting the award for special effects, Cuba Gooding Jr. paid tribute to singer Whitney Houston, who was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel on Saturday.

"Whitney, I will always love you," he said -- a reference to one of her best-known songs.

The effects prize went to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2, the final film in the magical franchise and the top-grossing British movie of the year.

Actor-turned-director Paddy Considine and producer Diarmid Scrimshaw took the best British debut prize for the wrenching domestic drama Tyrannosaur.

Kidulthood actor Adam Deacon won the rising star prize, the only category selected by public vote.

Senna, a portrait of the short, sensational life of race car driver Ayrton Senna, was named best documentary and also won the editing prize.

Business News: Apple stock breaks $500 level for the first time....!

Apple stock breaks $500 level for the first time

Apple's stock broke above $500 for the first time Monday. It was the latest step in a rally that began more than two weeks ago, when the company reported staggering sales and profits for the holiday quarter.

The shares hit $503.83 soon after opening, before subsiding to $502.60 in after-hours trading. That was up $9.18, or 1.9 percent, from Friday's close.

Apple Inc. and Exxon Mobil Corp. have been vying for the position as most valuable company in the world since last summer, but the latest rally has made the gadget maker 17 percent more valuable than the oil company. Its market capitalization is now $465 billion, compared to Exxon's $400 billion.

On Jan. 24, Apple posted net income of $13.06 billion for the quarter that ended in December, more than doubling its profits from the year before. Sales were $46.3 billion, up 73 percent from a year ago.

Even before it posted blow-out results, Wall Street analysts had pointed to a big gap between Apple's share price and its earnings. By common methods of valuation that compare a stock price to earnings and earnings growth, the stock should be worth much more.

The average target price of Apple shares given by 37 analysts who have updated their ratings since the Jan. 24 report is $588, according to FactSet data.

Analysts say the company's policy of keeping its cash rather than paying a dividend has been hurting the stock. Value-oriented funds are often forbidden from investing in companies that don't pay a dividend, and growth-focused funds are often tapped out — they're heavily invested in Apple already, and likely don't want to increase their holdings.

However, company watchers expect Apple to start paying a dividend this year. On a conference call after the earnings report, chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer said the board was in "active" discussions about the company's use of cash.

Apple looks set to launch sequels in its hit iPhone and iPad franchises this year. There's also speculation that it will move into the TV market.

What are you really selling or buying in the currency market?

What are you really selling or buying in the currency market?

The short answer is "nothing". The retail FOREX market is purely a
speculative market. No physical exchange of currencies ever takes
place. All trades exist simply as computer entries and are netted out
depending on market price. For dollar-denominated accounts, all
profits or losses are calculated in dollars and recorded as such on
the trader's account.

The prime reason behind existence of FOREX market is to facilitate the
exchange of one currency into another for multinational corporations
that trade currencies continually (for example, for payroll, payment
for costs of goods and services from foreign vendors, and merger and
acquisition activity). However, these days corporate comprise only
about 20% of the market volume. Fully 80% of trades in the currency
market are speculative in nature, put on by large financial
institutions, multibillion dollar hedge funds and even individuals who
want to express their opinions on the economic and geopolitical events
of the day.

Because currencies always trade in pairs, when a trader makes a trade
he or she is always long (buy) one currency and short (sell) the
other. For example, if a trader sells one standard lot (equivalent to
100,000 units) of EUR/USD, she would, in essence, have exchanged euros
for dollars and would now be "short" euros and "long" dollars. To
better understand this dynamic, let's use a concrete example. If you
went into an electronics store and purchased a computer for $1,000,
what would you be doing? You would be exchanging your dollars for a
computer. You would basically be "short" $1,000 and "long" one
computer. The store would be "long" $1,000 but now "short" one
computer in its inventory. The exact same principle applies to the FX
market, except that no physical exchange takes place. While all
transactions are simply computer entries, the consequences are no less
real.
